Solar panel maintenance in Lahore: the short version

The regular job is keeping the glass clean, plus a few checks while you do it. In Lahore that means roughly every three to four weeks, more often through the winter smog and after a dust storm. Clean early in the morning or in the evening, when the panels are cool, with plain water and a soft brush or cloth — no soap, chemicals, metal brush or high-pressure washer. While you are up there, check the panels, the wiring, the mounting structure and the inverter’s usual output. A wet roof is slippery: if your panels sit on a raised structure, get a professional team to do it.

What solar panel maintenance actually involves

For a home system, the routine comes down to two things: cleaning the panels and looking over the system while you do it. The panels are a large area of glass sitting in the open air in a dusty city. Dust, and in winter the smog, leave a layer on that glass, and that layer reduces how much electricity the panels make. Regular cleaning is the cheapest way to keep the system producing at its full capability.

If you have a battery, there is one more item, and how much work it is depends on the battery type. That is covered further down.

How often to clean solar panels in Lahore

Every three to four weeks in normal conditions. Treat that as a starting rhythm rather than a rule, because the right interval for your roof depends on the season and on what is around it.

Season or situation What happens to the panels What to do
Winter smog, November to January The hardest time of year in Lahore. Smog leaves a layer on the glass and the loss of output is larger. Clean more often than your usual interval.
Summer dust and storms Dust builds up on the glass, and a dust storm adds to it. Go and look at the panels after every dust storm, whatever the calendar says.
After good rain Rain washes a lot of the dust away, but marks can be left behind once the panels dry. You can usually leave it a little longer. Check the glass once it has dried rather than assuming it is clean.
Panels near trees Leaves and bird droppings cause more of a problem. Check more frequently and clear anything sitting on the glass.

How to clean solar panels the right way

  1. Pick the time of day. Early morning or evening, when the panels are cool. Pouring cold water on a panel that has been sitting in the afternoon sun can crack the glass.
  2. Sweep the dry dust off first with a soft brush, so that the water does not turn the dust into mud you then have to push around.
  3. Plain water, gentle pressure. Rinse the surface at low pressure.
  4. Soft cloth or soft brush, light hand. Wipe rather than scrub.
  5. Let the water run downwards off the panel, and do not let it collect along the edges.

That is the whole method. Plain water is enough.

What not to do to a solar panel

  • No soap, acid or chemicals. Harsh chemicals damage the panel’s top layer, and that damage can affect the warranty.
  • No metal brush, blade or anything abrasive. These damage the same top layer.
  • No cold water on hot panels. Wait until the glass is cool.
  • No high-pressure washer. The seals around the panel can be damaged.
  • Do not stand on the panels.

Cleaning solar panels safely

A wet roof is slippery. If the panels sit on a raised structure, or the roof is hard to get to in the first place, do not take the risk yourself: have a professional team do it. If you do clean your own panels, take your time, keep off the panels themselves and do not work on a raised structure. SNM Solutions provides cleaning and maintenance for its customers’ systems.

Maintenance checklist: what to check while you clean

Cleaning puts you next to the system regularly, which makes it the natural time to look it over. Each time you clean, check:

  • Is any panel broken or cracked?
  • Is any wiring hanging loose or chafing where it runs along the structure?
  • Are the structure’s nuts and bolts still tight?
  • Is the inverter showing its usual output on its screen, for that time of day and that weather?

The inverter screen is the check you can do without going up to the roof — from a 10 kW hybrid system in Garden Town, Lahore.

The inverter check needs no ladder. The screen tells you what the panels are producing without you going near them. Get into the habit of glancing at it: if the output looks clearly different from a similar day with similar weather, something has changed and it is worth finding out what. If you want to understand the inverter on your wall, our page on inverter brands and prices in Pakistan explains the options, and on-grid versus hybrid explains how the two kinds of system differ, including the battery a hybrid adds.

If a panel looks wrong rather than simply dirty, read how to check whether a panel is original and our comparison of the panel brands sold in Pakistan, so you know what is on your roof before you talk to anyone about a replacement.

Battery maintenance depends on the chemistry

An on-grid system has no battery, so this section does not apply to it.

A tubular (lead-acid) bank needs regular attention: distilled water topped up periodically, and ventilation, because a lead-acid battery gives off gas while it charges. It also needs a dedicated space.

A lithium bank needs none of that: no distilled water and no ventilation. Most SNM hybrid installations now use lithium storage. The detail on both is in lithium versus tubular batteries compared and our guide to lithium batteries for solar in Pakistan.

A maintenance routine you can keep

  • Every three to four weeks, and more often in smog season: clean the panels, and do the checks above while you are there.
  • After every dust storm: go and look, regardless of when you last cleaned.
  • Whenever you pass the inverter: glance at the screen.
  • If you have a tubular bank: keep up its water and ventilation on the schedule the battery maker gives you.

The thing to avoid is letting the glass stay dirty through the whole smog season. A layer that builds up over weeks is exactly what regular cleaning prevents.

Getting your solar panels cleaned in Lahore

What a visit involves depends on your system and how the array is mounted, so tell us the size and your area and we will explain it before anything is quoted. One of our own systems is the 10 kW hybrid system pictured above, in Garden Town.

Not an owner yet, and reading this to find out what you would be taking on? The summary is a rooftop wash every few weeks and a glance at a screen. Costs are on our pages for solar system prices in Lahore and every system size in Pakistan. Before you choose an installer, five questions to ask before you book an installer is worth reading, and it is worth asking how the panels will be reached for cleaning, because a raised structure is not safe to climb yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Lahore?

Every three to four weeks in normal conditions. Clean more often during the winter smog from November to January, check the panels after every dust storm, and you can usually leave it a little longer after good rain.

How much output do dirty solar panels lose?

A layer of dust reduces output noticeably, and the loss is larger in smog season. We do not put a single percentage on it. Regular cleaning is the cheapest way to keep the system producing at its full capability.

What is the correct way to clean a solar panel?

Early morning or evening, when the panels are cool, with plain water and a soft brush or cloth. Sweep the dry dust off first, rinse at low pressure, wipe gently, and let the water run downwards off the panel instead of collecting at the edges.

Can I use soap, detergent or a chemical cleaner on solar panels?

No. Plain water is enough. Harsh chemicals, abrasive brushes and metal tools damage the panel’s top layer, and that damage can affect the warranty.

Can I use a pressure washer on solar panels?

Not a high-pressure one. The seals around the panel can be damaged. Rinse with water at low pressure instead.

Is it safe to clean solar panels myself?

It depends on your roof. A wet roof is slippery and a raised mounting structure is dangerous to climb, so if the panels are high or hard to reach, have a professional team do it rather than risking it.

What else should I check apart from cleaning?

While cleaning, check that no panel is cracked, that no wiring is loose or chafing, that the structure’s nuts and bolts are tight, and that the inverter is showing its usual output. A tubular battery also needs distilled water and ventilation; a lithium battery needs neither.

Roman Urdu mein aam sawalat

Solar panel kitne arse baad saaf karne chahiye?

Aam halat mein har teen se chaar hafte baad. Sardiyon ki smog mein, yani November se January, zyada baar safai karni parti hai, aandhi ke baad panel zaroor dekh lein, aur achi barish ke baad kuch arsa waqfa diya ja sakta hai.

Panel saaf karne ka sahih tareeqa kya hai?

Kya khud safai karna mehfooz hai?

Ehtiyat zaroori hai. Geeli chhat phislan wali hoti hai aur buland structure par charhna khatarnak hai. Agar panel oonchai par hain to peshawar team se safai karwayein. SNM Solutions apne sarfeen ke liye safai aur dekh bhaal ki khidmat faraham karti hai.
