Solar vs generator: the short version

A generator and a solar system solve different problems. A generator only keeps the lights on during load-shedding, and it burns fuel for every hour it runs. An on-grid solar system cuts your bill but switches off when the grid goes down, so it does not replace a generator. A hybrid solar system with a battery does both: it cuts your bill every sunny day and keeps your backed-up loads running during an outage, for as long as the battery lasts, with no fuel. A 10 kW hybrid is approx Rs 1,500,000 with a 5 kWh battery or Rs 1,700,000 with 10 kWh. Whether it beats your generator depends on two numbers only you have: your outage hours and your fuel bill. This guide shows you how to work both out.

First, what do you actually need during load-shedding?

It is tempting to frame this as “solar or generator”, but the useful question is narrower: which appliances must keep running when the grid is off, and for how long? Fans, lights, the fridge, a water pump and the internet router are one kind of backup. Running two or three air conditioners through a long afternoon outage is a very different one.

Write down both before you compare anything: the list sets the battery size, the hours set how long it has to last.

Generator fuel cost: what it really costs you each month

A generator’s running cost is what adds up, and it depends entirely on your own numbers, so we will not guess them for you. Use this formula:

Monthly fuel cost = litres used per hour × hours the generator runs per day × 30 × your fuel price per litre

How to find “litres used per hour” for your generator. The manual’s rating assumes a particular load, so measure it instead: fill the tank to the brim, run the generator for one hour with your normal load-shedding appliances switched on, then note how much fuel it takes to fill it back up. Do it on a hot day, when the load is highest.

Generator cost item Where your number comes from
Fuel per hour The one-hour refill test above
Running hours per day Your area’s load-shedding schedule, plus unscheduled outages
Fuel price Today’s price at your pump. It changes, and so does your cost
Oil, filters and servicing Your mechanic’s bills over the last year, divided by twelve
Repairs Any starter, carburettor or alternator work in the last year

Add those up and you have what load-shedding costs you today. That is the number a hybrid system has to beat, and a generator never gives any of it back on the days the grid is on.

What each type of solar does when the grid goes off

Check this before anything else: not every solar system gives you backup.

  • On-grid solar shuts down with the grid, for safety. It cuts your bill, but on its own it will not replace your generator.
  • Hybrid solar keeps your backed-up loads running from the battery and the panels when the grid is off. In daylight the panels run the house and recharge the battery; after dark the battery carries the backed-up circuits.
  • Off-grid solar has no grid connection at all. It suits sites without a reliable connection.

So in a solar vs generator comparison, the fair match is a generator against a hybrid system. Here is what that costs.

System size On-grid (approx) Hybrid with battery (approx)
8 kW Rs 720,000 Rs 1,150,000 with 5 kWh
10 kW Rs 850,000 Rs 1,500,000 with 5 kWh / Rs 1,700,000 with 10 kWh
12 kW Rs 1,000,000 Rs 1,650,000 with 5 kWh / Rs 1,850,000 with 10 kWh
15 kW Rs 1,200,000 Rs 2,550,000 with 16 kWh

Prices are approximate, installed, and exclude WAPDA / LESCO net-billing charges. Hybrid pricing runs about Rs 135,000 to Rs 170,000 per kW depending on size and battery. Every size: solar system prices in Pakistan 2026.

Solar system vs generator, side by side

Generator Hybrid solar with battery
During load-shedding Runs as long as there is fuel Runs backed-up loads from battery and panels
When the grid is on Does nothing for your bill Cuts your bill every sunny day
Running cost Fuel for every hour, plus oil and servicing No fuel; panels need regular cleaning
Noise and fumes Both, and exhaust must be kept away from living spaces Quiet, no exhaust
Limit Fuel in the tank Battery size, and how much sun is left to recharge it

How long a solar battery keeps your house running

A generator’s limit is fuel. A hybrid system’s limit is the battery, so size it to your outage, not to your roof. The arithmetic is simple:

Backup hours ≈ usable battery capacity in kWh ÷ backed-up load in kW

Two things make this number smaller than it first looks. First, a battery’s usable capacity is less than the figure on its label, and for tubular batteries it is much less; the battery’s datasheet gives the usable figure, and our guide to lithium vs tubular batteries explains why the gap matters. Second, your load is the total wattage of everything on the backed-up circuit at the same time, so add up the ratings on the appliances themselves rather than guessing.

A worked example with round numbers, so you can see the method: a backed-up load of 1 kW running for 5 hours needs 5 kWh of usable storage. In daylight the panels share the load, so the battery lasts longer.

Our price table offers lithium banks of 5 kWh, 10 kWh and 16 kWh depending on system size. For a step-by-step method, see the solar battery size guide and current lithium battery prices.

When a generator still makes sense

We would rather you bought the right thing than the thing we sell. A generator is still worth keeping, or buying, in these cases:

  • Your outages are long and your essential load is heavy, for example several air conditioners through a long night. Price the battery that would cover that load before you decide; a hybrid system for daily savings plus a generator for the rare long outage may be the better mix.
  • You need backup for machinery or motors that draw a large starting current. Check the inverter’s surge rating against the equipment before you decide.
  • There is no roof or open space for panels.
  • You only need occasional emergency backup and your electricity bill is small. Then the saving that justifies solar is not there.

If you keep your generator alongside a hybrid system, ask whether the inverter you are quoted has a generator input, and have the connection made through a proper changeover so the generator can never feed the grid line.

Replacing a generator with a hybrid system: a checklist

  1. List your load-shedding appliances and add up their wattage.
  2. Note your outage hours, and whether they fall in the day or at night.
  3. Work out your generator’s monthly cost with the formula above.
  4. Collect your last twelve electricity bills and run them through the solar system calculator.
  5. Ask for a battery quote in usable kWh, not only the label figure.

If your family is out during the day and power use peaks in the evening, read on-grid vs hybrid solar in 2026 as well: the battery that covers load-shedding also moves midday solar to the evening.

Frequently asked questions

Is solar cheaper than a generator in Pakistan?

A hybrid solar system costs more up front, but it uses no fuel and cuts your electricity bill every sunny day, while a generator burns fuel for every hour it runs and does nothing for your bill. Which works out cheaper for you depends on your outage hours and fuel cost: multiply litres per hour by running hours per day, by 30, by your fuel price, and compare.

Can solar replace a generator during load-shedding?

Only a hybrid or off-grid system with a battery can. An on-grid solar system shuts down when the grid goes off, for safety, so it gives no backup. A hybrid system keeps your backed-up loads running from the battery and the panels.

How long will a solar battery run my house?

Divide the battery’s usable capacity in kWh by your backed-up load in kW. A load of 1 kW for 5 hours needs 5 kWh of usable storage. Usable capacity is lower than the label figure, so take it from the battery’s datasheet.

How much does a hybrid solar system with battery cost?

A 10 kW hybrid system is approx Rs 1,500,000 with a 5 kWh lithium battery or Rs 1,700,000 with 10 kWh, against approx Rs 850,000 for 10 kW on-grid. Prices exclude WAPDA / LESCO net-billing charges.

Can I keep my generator with a hybrid solar system?

Yes, as a second line of backup for long outages. Ask whether the hybrid inverter you are quoted has a generator input, and have it connected through a proper changeover so the generator can never feed the grid line.

How do I work out my generator’s fuel consumption per hour?

Fill the tank to the brim, run the generator for one hour with your usual load-shedding appliances on, then measure how much fuel it takes to refill. That real figure is more useful than the rating in the manual.

Roman Urdu mein aam sawalat

Generator behtar hai ya solar?

Generator sirf load shedding mein chalta hai aur har ghante fuel khata hai, bill par koi farq nahi parta. Battery wala hybrid solar system load shedding mein bhi chalta hai aur har dhoop wale din bill bhi kam karta hai. Apna generator ka mahana kharcha nikal kar hybrid system ki qeemat se muqabla karein.

Kya load shedding mein on-grid solar chalta hai?

Nahi. On-grid system grid band hote hi safety ke liye band ho jata hai. Backup chahiye to battery wala hybrid system lagwayein.

10 kW hybrid solar system kitne ka hai?

10 kW hybrid 5 kWh lithium battery ke sath taqreeban Rs 1,500,000 aur 10 kWh ke sath taqreeban Rs 1,700,000 ka hai. In mein WAPDA / LESCO net billing charges shamil nahi.
